Homework Habits teach children self-mastery, autonomy, intrinsic motivation and self efficacy.
Tips for Homework Habit:
Know the teachers — and what they're looking for.
Buy a study table & Set up a homework-friendly area.
Schedule a regular study time.
Help them make a plan.
Keep distractions to a minimum.
Make sure kids do their own work.
Be a motivator and monitor.
Set a good example.
Praise their work and efforts.
How much time is needed for Academic Homework time for Optimal Results from Learning?
Sixth Grade - 60 Minutes of Homework, 9th - 12th Grade - 90 - 120 Minutes of Homework. Generally National Education Association recommends 10 minutes per grade. However for the first grade it has be more than 10 minutes and up to 20 minutes.
Children must believe they are capable of doing the work. That is done by building habits through rules. The clearer the choice, the easier the choice is to maintain. Consistency and repetition are the keys to establishing habits. Also called Empowerment Parenting, this is done by:
- Allowing children to experience the consequences of their actions.
- Giving children choices within reasonable parameters.
- Encouraging children to take responsibility for things they control--because the parents refuse to take on the responsibility.
- Helping them to think in terms of options and consequences, causes and likely effects.
- Building habits, slowly, that will allow them to reach their goals.
WHEN WE RE-INFORCE AN INAPPROPRIATE BEHAVIOR, WE ARE CREATING A HABIT - AN UNPRODUCTIVE ONE.
